Ilhan Ilkilic MD Ph.D has studied medicine, philosophy, Islamic science and oriental philology in Istanbul, Bochum and Tübingen (Germany). He did his philosophical doctoral thesis at the Tübingen University as a DFG-Scholarship holder. He was guest scholar at the Georgetown University (Kennedy Institute of Ethics) (1999) and at the Duke University, Institute for Genome Science and Policy, Durham (USA 2008). He was coordinator of the project “Public Health Genetics. Development, Conception, Normative Evaluation” supported by the German Ministry of Science and Education (2005-2008). He was lecturer at the Institute for History, Philosophy and Ethics of Medicine of Mainz Medical Faculty at the Johannes Gutenberg University (2008-2012). He wrote his Habilitation-Thesis ‘Ethical Aspects of Medical Decisions at the End of Life in an Intercultural Context’ at the same University. He was guest Professor at the Frankfurt University. He was director of Institute for Health Sciences of the Istanbul University (2016-2019) and chair of the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics at the Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine (2015-2021). He is currently dean of the faculty for culture and social sciences at the Turkish-German University in Istanbul. He is a member on many committees, including German Ethics Council (2012-2020), the Central Ethics Committee at the German Medical Association (since 2016), the Advisory Group on Cultural Contexts of Health and Well-being WHO (since 2016), the Bioethics Commission of the Federal State Rhineland-Palatinate (2009-2011); the Clinical Ethics Committee of the Medical Faculty of University of Mainz (2005-2012). His special interests include history of medical ethics, genetics and ethics, intercultural medical ethics, ethical issues at the beginning and end of life, AI ethics in medicine.
