Philip Kunig graduated in 1976 from the University of Hamburg with the First State Examination in Law. Following this, he completed his legal clerkship, while at the same time working as a research assistant to Professor Ingo von Münch at the Institute for International Affairs at the University of Hamburg. In 1980, Kunig passed the Second State Examination in Law and was awarded a doctorate with a dissertation on international law developments in Africa. Between 1981 and 1986, Kunig was a university assistant at the Faculty of Law at the University of Hamburg, teaching constitutional law and international law. In 1985 he habilitated with a paper entitled "Das Rechtsstaatsprinzip. Reflections on its Significance for the Constitutional Law of the Federal Republic of Germany" and was appointed professor of public law at the University of Hamburg. In 1988 he took over the chair of public law at Freie Universität Berlin. From 1992 to 2000 he served as a part-time judge at the Constitutional Court of the State of Berlin, which was newly established after the German reunification. At Freie Universität Berlin he held numerous positions, was director of the Institute for Public Law and International Law, vice dean and dean, then member of the Academic Senate from 2004 to 2011. Teaching and lecturing activities as well as guest professorships have taken Kunig to Tokyo, Beijing, Taipei, Shanghai, Hanoi, Bangkok, Seoul, and frequently to Istanbul and Ankara. In 2012, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Law Faculty of the University of Athens. In 2013, Kunig received an honorary doctorate in Law from the University of Istanbul. Since 2010, he has been vice president of the consortium set up by German universities to establish the Turkish-German University in Istanbul. In 2016, he retired from Freie Universität Berlin. Since 2013, he has taught public law and international law at the Faculty of Law of the Turkish-German University. From 2016 to 2022, he served as coordinator of the German side for the Law Faculty and, moreover, as advisor to the rector. In addition to his research and editorial activities in the field of German and international law, Kunig is taking part in several Turkish-German research projects and jurisprudential collaborations.
