Assoc. Prof. Dr. habil. Robin Kurilla’s research is situated at the intersection of communication and culture. His work ranges from foundation theoretical research to primarily qualitative empirical studies. He studied communication studies, psychology and marketing in Essen, Denpasar and San Sebastián. After completing his master's degree, he worked as a trilingual freelance writer in San Sebastián from 2006 to 2007. Kurilla has carried out extensive foundation theoretical, historiographical and cross-cultural studies, which is best reflected in his dissertation (2012, grade: summa cum laude) on the communicative interrelatedness of emotions in conflicts in the Ruhr area, the Spanish Basque Country, and Bali. The two-volume book (published by Springer VS) resulting from this project received the award for the faculty's best dissertation from the Rector of the University of Duisburg-Essen. Robin Kurilla's habilitation thesis, also published by Springer VS, deals with the fabrication of group identities and provides the basis for a redefinition of the field of group communication research as well as for a paradigm shift in social theory. The English translation of the monograph was published by Palgrave Macmillan. Kurilla's research and teaching interests include intercultural and transcultural communication, emotion research, digitalization, artificial emotions and explainable artificial intelligence, group and organizational communication, political communication, communication theory, social theory, theory of society, media theory and history, traditional and emerging public spaces, technological and social transformations of media environments as well conflict communication. Robin Kurilla is currently working on, among other things, a textbook as an introduction to communication research.
